Modern Supervision
Modern Supervision is an NQF aligned training programme which consists of 17 Modules, Facilitator and Learner Guides, Assessments and a video. The programme allows learners to accumulate credits for the Certificate in Generic Management Level 4. The four unit standards covered in this programme are:

Module 1 Business Management and Role of the Supervisor
On completion of this module you will be able to do the following:
- Describe the Management activities involved in running a successful business
- Explain the basic activities involved in the management process
Module 2 Planning and Scheduling
On completion of this module you will be able to do the following:
- define the planning function in your organization and indicate who is responsible for it
- set departmental objectives
- convert policy statements into action plans
- draw up a plan
- draw up a GANTT chart
- draw up a PERT (CPA) chart
Module 3 Organising and Organisation
On completion of this module you will be able to do the following:
- Identify the organizing function in the organization and indicate who is responsible for it
- Organise your work group for a specific task
- Draw up an organisation chart for your own organisation and interpret it in terms of type, lines of authority, chain of command and centralization
- Describe the coordinating task in the organization and in the supervisory position with the use of examples
Module 4 Delegation
On completion of this module you will be able to do the following:
- Draw up a list of your own responsibilities and mark those that can be delegated
- Explain the difference between responsibility and accountability using examples from your own work
- In a roleplay delegate work to a subordinate
Module 5 Leadership
On completion of this module you will be able to do the following:
- Identify the leading function in an organization and indicate who in the organization is responsible for leading
- Identify the 3 different leadership styles
- Implement appropriate leadership styles when faced with different situations in the workplace
Module 6 Motivation
On completion of this module you will be able to do the following:
- Explain why it is important to motivate a team and how levels of motivation can be assessed
- Apply the theories of motivation
- Describe techniques that leaders can use to motivate a team
- Provide feedback to a team
- Recognise achievement
- Indicate how a team leader can empower members of a team
Module 7 Communication
On completion of this module you will be able to do the following:
- Describe the communication function
- Make suggestions as to how cultural diversity can be accommodated in communication
- Explain the importance of listening in communication
- Explain the importance of trust in communication
- Plan and deliver a verbal communication
- Structure a written report
Module 8 Problem Analysis and Decision Making
On completion of this module you will be able to do the following:
- Explain the decision making role of the supervisor using examples from your own job
- Describe the decision making steps to be followed
- Complete a problem analysis and apply the decision making process for an actual workplace situation
Module 9 Control
On completion of this module you will be able to do the following:
- Identify the control function in your organization, and indicate who is responsible for this function
- Identify relevant controls in your own job and give examples
- Describe your role in controlling worker performance and how you assess their performance
- Set up a control system for a process, implementing the positive approach to control
- Devise a quality control programme that will improve quality in your department
- Identify cost reduction opportunities
- Draw up a budget
Module 10 Safety and Housekeeping
On completion of this module you will be able to do the following:
- Draw up a safety programme for your department, highlighting specific danger areas
- Draw up a programme to improve housekeeping in your department
Module 11 Recruitment
On completion of this module you will be able to do the following:
- Prepare a forecast to establish labour requirements
- Prepare a job description
- Interview an applicant and critically evaluate the suitability of the applicant to the job
Module 12 Induction
On completion of this module you will be able to do the following:
- Draw up an induction programme for a new employee in your department which includes all relevant documentation, processes, and information
- Prepare to receive a new member on a team
- Introduce new members
- Explain how performance is monitored
- Explain opportunities available in the organization for lifelong learning
- In a roleplay, complete the introductions and explanations required in an induction
Module 13 Job Instruction
On completion of this module you will be able to do the following:
- Do a job breakdown for one of the jobs you supervise
- Identify key points and arrange all steps in the most appropriate sequence to facilitate learning
- State how you will go about implementing the instruction method
Module 14 Industrial Relations
On completion of this module you will be able to do the following:
- State how you can promote good industrial relation in your organization
- Apply basic industrial relations in your dealing with shop stewards and workers
Module 15 Handling Grievance
On completion of this module you will be able to do the following:
- In a roleplay you will deal with a grievance interview
Module 16 Maintaining Discipline
On completion of this module you will be able to do the following:
- Explain the disciplinary task of a supervisor and the role of the supervisor in the disciplinary process
- In a roleplay you will deal with a disciplinary interview
