Mechanical
If you’re interested in levers, gears, pulleys, valves, hydraulics, or metal, the training you’re looking for will fall under the Mechanical Department. We have a variety of ready-made courses, whether you’re aiming to develop or upgrade your skills.
Our skills training starts with basic hand skills and then progresses to the more specialized fields. The main fields of training, available in learnerships and apprenticeships, are:
- Fitting: Providing all the necessary skills that a maintenance fitter in a general or chemical factory would be expected to have and be fully competent in.
- Turning: Turning can also involve Milling and Surface Grinding, although the latter two could be given under their own headings if required. The combined trade of Fitter and Turner is also available.
- Milling: The operation of a milling machine, including all its many accessories, and the production of a turned article on the milling machine as well.
- Surface Grinding: The fine finishing of an article by grinding the surface to the required limits.
- Tool, Jig and Die Making: This is a combination of skills including, amongst others, turning, milling, surface grinding and assemblage.
- Fabrication: The new skill that combines the trades of Sheetmetal Worker and Boilermaker into one, dependant purely on the thickness of plate. However the traditional Boilermaking Apprenticeship is also offered.
- Welding: All types of welding can be taught, such as Gas Welding and Cutting, Arc Welding, MIG and TIG Welding.
- Automotive: A wide range of courses for petrol engine vehicles are currently on offer, from “do it yourself” to motor mechanics apprenticeships and Learnerships.
ETC has the resources to train in a very wide range of mechanical skills, developing both young minds as well as old hands, providing both with a diversity of skills and techniques to fabricate, repair and maintain anything related to the mechanical field.
The Mechanical Training Department trains mainly under the MERSETA (Manufacturing Engineering and Related services Seta). For a full list of all these accreditations click here.
